Paradise Valley

A town of roughly 15 square miles wedged between Phoenix and Scottsdale, built around one mountain.

Paradise Valley is its own incorporated town, not a Scottsdale or Phoenix neighborhood, and it's shaped almost entirely by Camelback Mountain and Mummy Mountain rising out of the middle of it. It's mostly large residential lots and four namesake luxury resorts, with the closest full commercial/retail districts sitting just across the border in Scottsdale or Phoenix. That trade-off, privacy and mountain views over walkable retail, is the defining lifestyle decision for anyone considering it.

Getting In and Out

Paradise Valley's location is one of its underrated advantages: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is only about 12 miles away, roughly a 24-minute drive, noticeably closer than most North Scottsdale addresses. Scottsdale Airpark, for private aviation, is about 4 miles and 10 minutes away.

Camelback Mountain Hiking

Camelback Mountain, at 2,680 feet, has two main trails, both rated Extremely Difficult. Echo Canyon Trail climbs about 1,400 feet in roughly one mile on the mountain's west side and is the steeper of the two, with sections that use handrails. Cholla Trail approaches from the east flank, starting well-maintained before turning technical near the ridgeline, and runs slightly longer than Echo Canyon. Both trails are best hiked October through May, don't allow dogs, and have parking open sunrise to sunset only, arrive early, both lots fill fast.

Resorts & Golf

Paradise Valley is home to four luxury resorts: the JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa, the Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley at The Palmeraie, and DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Paradise Valley. Golf follows the same resort-anchored pattern: Camelback Golf Club, Paradise Valley Country Club, and The Short Course at Mountain Shadows are the area's primary courses.

Dining

El Chorro Lodge (Yelp), at the foot of Camelback and Mummy Mountains, has operated for nearly a century and is known for its sticky buns and seasonally driven Southwestern menu. Lon's at the Hermosa Inn (Yelp) occupies a converted 1930s adobe artist's estate, with thick adobe walls, wood-beamed ceilings, and outdoor fireplaces framing a menu built on local sourcing, Crow's Dairy goat cheese, Noble Bread. Both are destination restaurants for the broader Valley, not just Paradise Valley residents, which says something about the caliber of dining built into this small a town.

Schools

Paradise Valley's roughly 33,000 school-age residents are split across three districts. Most fall under the Paradise Valley Unified School District (32 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 6 high schools districtwide). Some Paradise Valley addresses feed into the Scottsdale Unified School District instead, with teens attending Chaparral or Saguaro High School, while others feed into Phoenix Union's Camelback High School. As with North Scottsdale, the specific address determines the district, it isn't uniform across the town.

What Most Buyers Don't Realize

Buyers moving from walkable, retail-dense markets sometimes underestimate how residential-only Paradise Valley is by design, there's no downtown to speak of, and daily errands mean a short drive into Scottsdale or Phoenix. What you're buying is privacy, lot size, mountain views, and proximity to Sky Harbor. If a buyer wants restaurants and shops in walking distance, we're usually steering them toward North Scottsdale instead, even if Paradise Valley is the more prestigious address on paper.
